Over the years, ethnic theatres have sprung up in cultural epicenters such as Harlem, New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The plays performed in ethnic thetres covered subject matter such as Native American tribal rituals to the moral conflict faced during times of war.
Ethnic theatres faced mounting opposition. Man experienced conflict within amusing directors and playwrights while others maced opposition from the outside community. During periods of war, German theatres were protest by the community while Asian American theatres were barred from operating on Sundays when most working class audiences were able to see the show. Whites would make racist "black face" parodies of African American theatre called minstrel shows.
